Fighting Corruption and Environmental Abuse – Global Witness is an international organisation recognised for bold, tenacious campaigns to expose and break links between natural resources, conflict and corruption. Every day, Global Witness fights abuses in the political or economic system. Ahead of the Paradise Papers – a series of stories on offshore corruption and tax avoidance, the Global Witness Brussels office hired Sustainability Consult in 2017 to bring visibility to its anti-money laundering policy asks and help amplify its message.
Before and immediately after news of the Paradise Papers broke, we mapped and reached out to Brussels-based journalists covering financial corruption to pitch the Global Witness angle. Our work shone a spotlight on the Global Witness EU policy recommendations, achieving coverage on broadcast channels and in influential news outlets. We also generated OpEd opportunities to further spread the message.
(new section) In the autumn of 2018, we worked closely with Global Witness to co-organise a high-level evening reception at the European Parliament to address how sustainable finance in Europe could help stop human rights abuses against Land and Environmental Defenders. The programme included speeches by influencers from the Parliament, Commission and EEAS. Photographic portraits of Defenders were exhibited at the event in collaboration with the UN Environment Program and the Guardian newspaper.
